painful mass in breast...diagmammo and u/s ordered??

Hi.  I have a quick question.  I am 34 years old with no family history of breast cancer.  I went to my annual ob/gyn appointment today and she did a breast exam and found a lump/mass on my right breast.  It is painful and tender and comes and goes (the pain/tenderness).  She ordered a diagnostic mammogram and ultra sound and now I am really nervous.  I am going this Thursday and I have never had a mammogram before.  A couple of years ago, my then ob/gyn noticed my "lumpy boobies" and stated that they were normal and due to hormonal fluctuations but she never ordered any mammograms.  Is my Dr. being overly cautious?  I'm ok with that, just want to be sure.  Please advise...i'm really nervous... thanks!

Well, just returned from my Diagnostic mammog and u/s.  All is well.  Dr. saw nothing of concern other than dense breast tissue, and "lumpy boobies".  (My term...not his).  I have no family history of breast cancer but am appreciative that my Dr. was overlly cautios!  Now off to the PCOS forum...now hopefull those tests will yield some good results!  Thanks!

There is a difference between "lumpiness" of the breast tissue and a true palpable lump. I believe that your Dr. is being vigilant but I don't think you should be overly nervous about the testing ... it's Good Medical Practice to my way of thinking.  Regards ...
