post-menopausal fibroadenoma

post-menopausal fibroadenoma

Hello, a routine mammogram followed by a second and ultrasound has detected what the radiologist says is a fibroadenoma. Not sure of size but radiologist indicated the size of a pea. I am almost 56, post-menopausal and not on HRT. Had two children in my 30's and breast fed both. Will be seeing the surgeon to schedule a biopsy tomorrow (2/2/10). Should I ask for an excisional biopsy? Thanks for any help.

Hi
A fibroadenoma is a benign (non-cancerous) growth. In middle aged women, the tendency is to remove the entire lump.. Excisional biopsy is currently the standard procedure for lumps that are smaller than an inch or so in diameter. So depending on the individual situation, putting the findings in context, a suspected fibroadenoma might be biopsied in younger women and preferably removed in older ones An ultrasound cannot always make a diagnosis of fibroadenoma with certainty.
Your surgeon will certainly advise you how to proceed and if it's better for you to have this lump removed or not.
Good luck and best wishes.
