progesterone replacement

Will taking progesterone (Prometrium) reduce heavy menstrual bleeding?  What are the side effects?  Will it increase risk of breast cancer?

Dear Roe, There are various treatments for abnormal menstrual bleeding and progesterone may be one such treatment depending on what has been determined as the cause.  Progesterones may cause gastrointestinal disturbances, changes in appetite or weight, fluid retention, acne, allergic skin rashes, breast pain, changes in libido, fatigue, dizziness, in high doses thrombotic disorders.  Side effects vary dependent on the dose, and type of progesterone used.  Regarding risk of breast cancer, use of progesterone is contraindicated in women with a history of breast cancer, however, individual risk would have to be determined based on evaluation of a person
