question on cysts & calcifications

question on cysts & calcifications

I was just wondering about my left breast that I Was to wait 6 months to see if theres any changes now its down to 3 months Aug. 2011  till I Go back for a mammogram. I  was told at my routine mammogram in Feb 2011 that I Had calcifications in my left breast & they wanted repeat in 6 months another mammo just to make sure theres no change & then  Called & spoke to a nurse on the phone to ask her some questions and she told me  I Have a benign cyst on my left breast. So my question is do the microcalcifications come from having the cyst in my breast?and if  i go back and theres no change what then? more waiting?? because the waiting is so hard!!!! or do they remove the cysts? How do they do that? Also I Do have fibocystic breasts could that be how this different cyst developed she the nurse said its  my cyst is leaking a fluid. I'm 43 breast cancer does not run in my family. I Know absolutely noone that ever had breast cancer neither on my mom or dads side not even distant. my one aunt on my dads side had a benign cyst that she just gets checked every 6 months for any changes.I Wonder if thats what they'll do with me.? shes been going every 6 months for the last 10 years..All is always fine. any doctor radiologist or anyone! that  experienced this please reply  I'm so anxious!! and have 3 more months to wait!!! Its all  I can think about!!!

Hi,
First of all, benign breast cyst do not turn into cancer.A cyst is a fluid-filled sac that will generally increase in size before the menstrual period and decrease afterward. They are not usually removed unless they become too enlarged or too painful.
Sometimes calcification can form around benign cysts or fibroadenomas and usually these types of calcifications have benign characteristic that are obvious to the radiologist, otherwise a biopsy would have certainly been recommended.
Calcifications become a concern "only" when clusters are found or when the calcifications have irregular shapes.
Unfortunately it's a standard procedure that when benign appearing calcification are detected, they still have to be monitored regularly to check if they remain stable or have changed in appearance.
Sometimes benign cysts with clear fluid could disappear after the menstrual cycle, but if you are concerned about it ,you could discuss it with your health care provider who can advise you whether or not it warrants to have it aspirated. This is a simple office procedure known as fine needle aspiration.
I wouldn't worry ,if I were you though, because nothing looks alarming at this point.Just follow what the radiologist has recommended to make sure that all is fine.
Best wishes...
