removal of ovaries

by r11, Mar 25, 2009 06:30AM
I have had mastectomy (MRM) of right breast &  6 cycles of chemo( FEC & Taxotere) .post which  28 rounds of radiation. I have started on tamoxifen. My surgeon in a corridor conversation mentioned that I would need to get my ovaries removed in future. I would be meeting my oncologist next month and surely would be asking him regarding this but just thought if I could understand why do I have to remove ovaries. Can anyone help?

I think we have spoken before .... the removal of your ovaries would be to halt the production of Estrogen ... evidently your tumor was ER positive. You are taking Tamoxifen which is blocking the Estrogen and I'm sorry but I forgot you age ..... there are other medications that are prescribed when you are post menopausal or after the 5 yr.s of Tamoxifen for the same purpose. I'm not sure why oophorectomy was mentioned but I would certainly discuss this with your Oncologist. Some women do elect for removal of the ovaries but it isn't always done. If there is some particular reason in your case I'm sure your Oncologist can explain in detail.   Regards ...

A friend of mine who has undergone the treatment for both her breast has been told by her oncologist that she can opt for some injections instead of removal of ovaries. She needs to take these shots every 3 months. She is also confused. Should she take the shots or not....
