scar tissue from masectomy

scar tissue from masectomy

My aunt had a bilateral masectomy five weeks ago and has mentioned repeatedly that her chest in hurting, specifically the scar itself.  She describes the sensation to feel like a twig is lying beneath her scar.  It's hard to the the touch and causing her a lot of discomfort.  What are your thoughts on this? I was hoping to learn more and share the information with her.  I have keyloid (sp?)skin and even experience similar symptoms from having moles removed even.  My doctor usually injects the area with steroids to alleviate and help in the healing process.  Is this something to consider for her as well?  Thank you ahead of time for replying.

Dear luter:  Scar tissue can be painful.  However, it would be prudent to eliminate other causes of her discomfort.  Specifically, infection or recurrence of the cancer.  She should discuss this with her surgeon, who can evaluate her specific situation.  I do not know that steroids in this case would be a good idea.
