should i get a second opinion?

by LisaMarieLN, Jun 06, 2008 05:59PM
i am 43, I recently found a huge lump in my right breast. after getting a diagnostic mammogram and a diagnostic ultrasound (of the breast in question) i was told that i actually have two lumps in the right breast, the mammogram did not pick it up, the ultrasound did, and that they are both cysts and to leave them alone. the one i found myself is HUGE and very painful; it has been hurting for several weeks and does not seem to fade with my monthly schedule at all. my question is should i seek a second opinion? are cysts commonly misdiagnosed?

Well cysts are good news per say, it is not cancer and will not kill you.  However I have heard they can be very painful.  I think a fine needle aspiration can be done by your doctor to drain the cysts.  This should decrease the size of the cysts, the pain should stop and the cysts go away of their own accord.

No point suffering pain if something can be done about it.

An ultrasound clearly shows up cyst.  If they were not cysts the ultrasound would not be able to go through the lumps.  So I would say you can be quite confident of the results and also breast cancer does not tend to be painful, but cysts can be.

If the cysts are that painful then I would insist that they either be drained or removed surically. There is no reason to put up with that much pain when a simple needle stick to drain the cyst can be done .... probably in the office (depending on the Surgeon).
