sister breast cancer, I take ERT, should I worry?

My sister just had a lumpectomy, the tumor was encapsulated and small, too small to be felt, it was found by a regular mammogram.

My question is, I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago and have been taking Estrace ever since.  Should I worry?  My next regular exam isn't until August.  Because of this new development should I make an apt to talk to my gyn earlier?

Thank you.

Dear mlweeman:  This is not necessarily a straightforward answer.  The quick answer is that studies show that HRT does increase the risk of breast cancer, decreases osteoporosis, and has no impact on heart disease.  However, much more must be taken into consideration in order to determine how this applies to you and your situation.  Factors such as age, your sister's age, and other risk factors must be considered.  You may benefit from a discussion with a genetic counselor who can determine your risk and make recommendations regarding HRT and surveillance.
