small lump, redness, soreness

Yesterday I noticed a reddened area near the nipple of one breast and also can feel a small lump and it is somewhat tender.  It is the size of a quarter.  I don't think I hit anything that would cause a possible bruise although the area resembles just that.  I am planning to call my GYN tomorrow.  I have never had a mammogram so I don't know if I would have had prior concerns.  I'm 40 and this is the first sign or symptom I've had and I'm quite anxious.  I saw another posting about a similar red area, but there was not mention of a lump or soreness.

Dear Just40, It is difficult to say if this is something that would be a problem.  It could very well be caused by something totally benign (non-cancerous).  However, as this is a change for you, it is best to move forward with getting this checked out, if the symptoms resolve before your appointment is scheduled you may want to consider following through with the appointment anyway, as you are of an age to be getting screening mammograms along with the yearly exam by a health care professional.
