solid mass

My wife felt a lump in her right breast (it is locate in the 9 to 10 oclock position) and went to the doctor.  She had a mammogram and ultrasound done.  The radiologist said the mass is solid (2.3 to 2.5cm) and didn't like what he saw.  He said it could be breast cancer.  We have are going to get a biopsy.  I'm worried sick about this, what are the chances of it being cancer?  If it is cancer, what are is the survival rate for 5 yrs (with a mass of this size)?  Thanks.

Dear sltennis:  It is impossible to comment on the chances of this being cancer.  Without a biopsy - we just don't know.  If the doctor is very concerned, then I think your worry could be legitimate.  However, more information is needed in order to comment on pathology or prognosis.  If this is cancer, you need to know that women with breast cancer can be effectively treated and tend to do very well, although there are many factors that influence the particulars.
