sonogram or needle biopsy

sonogram or needle biopsy

I have a .8cm object in my breast. I was told it's ok now (fibroid) but I should come back every 6 months for ultrasound or have a needle biopsy and come back in a year.
Is there any other difference between the two procedures?

Hi there.

A breast ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure which can be done by a qualified sonologist.  The problem with ultrasound is that the reports can still be equivocal after the procedure and the sonologist or your doctor may recommend a biopsy later.  A needle biopsy is rather a more invasive procedure in the sense that a needle is inserted (which can cause pain) to sample a part of the object.  The pain would usually last a few days and will be relieved spontaneously.  The biopsy is a more accurate test of ascertaining the nature of the breast lesion compared to an ultrasound.  However, you should discuss with your doctor about his comfort levels regarding the two procedures.  Regards.
