sudden appeasrance of spiculated mass

sudden appeasrance of spiculated mass

I am 66 yrs. old and have been in excellent health, and living a very active life.  Ten days ago I discovered that my right breast was appearring to fold under at the 5 o'clock position.  Two days later my PCP sent me for a another mammogram ( last 6 mos ago) and no sign, so then ordered a sonogram where a lump was discovered .  The same day they did an MRI.  Findings:  BI-RADS Category 5 - a spiculated irregular enhancing mass in the medial inframammary fold measuring 1.9 cm in diameter.  There is evidence of skin retraction in the inframammary fold and multiple small spiculations are seen eminating from the mass.  The posterior margin is in contact with the chest wall musculature for at least 1.8 cm and there is possible muscle invasion.  There are some scattered areas of nodular enhancement in the 12 o'clock region without associated morphologic abnormality.  These areas of enhancement are progressive and no areas of washout are seen. Somewhat immobile nature of the mass.   As I mentioned, I am very active as a farmer, often riding a tractor over rough terrain, and lifting heavy sacks, tub fermenters, and such.  I have probably had several injuries to the chest area froim slips, etc.  Also have an 18 pound cat who frequently will stand on my chest ( full weight on one paw) when we are resting in bed.  I am sceduled for a surgical consultation tomorrow afternoon.  We are concerned as to what these indications may mean and what questions we should ask.  Should I request a second opinion before proceeding beyond this consultation.  Which type of biopsy or treatment?

Hi Susie,

See what the surgeon has to say.  You are always entitled to a second and even third opinion if you need a tie-breaker to decide on what to do.  Take a person along with you to take notes on what is said.  Typically, the patient takes in about less than half of what is said because it is such an emotional situation and there is so much information given.  I think it is likely the surgeon will recommend a biopsy and then you go from there.  Take it step by step, ok?  One thing at a time, one day at a time.

Let me know how you do, ok?

Warmly,

Chris
