taxol vs. taxotere

by d*k*t*, Aug 26, 2004 12:00AM
I recently completed 4 rounds of AC for stage 2, 1.9 cm invasive ductal bc. clean margins, er/pr positive, her2 neg confirmed with FISH, two positive nodes one with more than 2mm of disease.  I am premenopausal. I opted for a lumpectomy with radiation sandwiched between my chemotherapy.  Is there an advantage to using either taxol or taxotere for my situation? Is tamoxifen my only choice for continued treatment?

Dear d*k*t, Both Taxol and Taxotere have been approved for use as part of an adjuvant treatment protocol for node-positive breast cancer.  There is no data as to one of these drugs being superior to the other.

As you are premenopausal - tamoxifen (anti-estrogen) would be the choice in terms of hormonal treatment.  The aromatase inhibitors are not appropriate therapy for pre-menopausal women.
