thickening of breast

Hi !  I've had a what i can only describe as a discomfort in my right breast, i've had it for a few months now, i put off going to my G.P.  because i couldn't feel a lump ? Today decided to go to the Dr because it's getting me down. The G.P said there was a thickening ? She has refered me to the hospital ? I am now very worried, i should have gone sooner. Can thickening mean Cancer ?

Not necessarily...Breast thickening really does not mean anything much and is a non-specific finding.This can represent areas of increased breast tissue density, hormonal breast changes, areas of neoplasm and sometimes unfortunately even cancer.You will most probably need some testing such as a mammogram / ultrasound and if need be a biopsy to know for sure the cause of this breast thickening..
