tiny areola bump

I am not really sure what to think of this. I have a doctors appointment next week but I am too curious to wait for it. Every once in awhile I get a pimple or two on my areolas, and they usually go away after a day or two. Recently I have noticed one that looks like a pimple but it does not go away. I tried to pop it but it does not come out of the skin. Underneath the skin it feels like a tiny hard bump the same size as a normal pimple but since it does not come out like a pimple or go away, I am not sure what it is. What could this be?

Dear mphilnj,  Skin on the nipples and areola (the darker part surrounding the nipple) is like skin anywhere on the body and can have many abnormalities. The areola will also develop little bumps (called Montgomery’s glands) and little glands (sebaceous glands) that are normal. Without examination, we cannot say for sure what this is.

I am not a doctor, but I have had several little bumps on my areola in the past.  I occasionaly get ingrown hairs around the edge that will have a little lump or bump.  It is usually not very painful and it goes away within a week.  I also have little bumps on my areola that were related to breast feeding my children.  I can't remember the official name, but they have been there since the birth of my first child.  I also have gotten little blackheads or pimples on and around the aeola over the years - I have oily skin.  I am always watching things like that because skin cancer runs in my family. My best laymen's advice would be to have any spot, lump or bump checked out by a doctor if it doesn't clear up within a week or two at the most.  Always be cautious of things that show up on your skin (and especially on your breast) and get a doctor's opinion.
