treatment after bilateral mastectomy

treatment after bilateral mastectomy

Hi I  am 44 yr. old I was dx with DSIC grade 3  I had a needle localization done in Feb /10 they found the tumor involved in the inked margin therefore incomplete resected.   Report says ductal carcinoma in situ, grade 3, comedo type, multifocal with lobular cancerization involving inked margins, no invasive carcinoma seen  I am now having a bilateral mastectomy in mid May  do you think I may need treatment afterwards such as radiation or chemotherapy  my doctor says in most cases of DSIC the mastectomy is the treatment he is going to check some lymph nodes just to be sure no cancer is found their  I fear the treatment more than the cancer.  Do I have the choice not too take them.

Dear happerdays, Bilateral mastectomy may very well be all that is needed as treatment for DCIS.  Your doctor will be able to advise for sure once they know the results of the pathology after surgery.  At that time a discussion of the findings, and risks and benefits of any treatment recommended will occur.  After that discussion you will be better able to make an informed decision regarding further treatment (if any is recommended).
