two primary cancers

by nancyspenc, May 18, 2008 08:29AM
Hi,
I have both breast and lung (primary) cancer. I just had the large lobe of my left lung removed. A month ago the small tumour in my right breast was taken out, and the surgeon just took a lymph node (or more; will know this week) for biopsy (she was unable to do the usual sentinel node biopsy because the dye didn't show). So far, I know that the breast cancer is Stage One. Having primary lung cancer as well as breast cancer, how does that tend to affect the type of post-surgery treatment you're apt to get? staging? prognosis? Because of two primaries, is it wise to check for cancer elsewhere in the body? CT or MRI? any organs in particular, or just everywhere? Thanks, and sorry about all the questions!

Hi there.

I understand your concern.  A double primary cancer is really an uncommon occurrence and this really post a big management challenge for your and your doctors.  I agree that you may require a complete staging study with scans of your abdomen (CT or MRI), or bone scans.  In my opinion, post-operative treatment should focus more on the primary lung cancer since this is more aggressive than the stage I breast cancer.  Your doctor may recommend chemotherapy directed more towards and lung cancer.   The prognosis will be more of that of the lung rather than the breast malignancy.  However, I suggest that you talk with your doctor regarding a multidisciplinary consult to present your case.  This way, more doctors can discuss your condition and suggest the best possible course of treatment.

Regards and God bless.
