ultrasound after mamogram(mammogram)

ultrasound after mamogram(mammogram)

I have had four mammograms since turning 40.  Out of the four I have been called back three times for ultrasound followup.  I just got another call back yesterday.  I had a benign lump removed three years ago that the radiologist could not tell much about by mammo or ultrasound due to  very dense breast tissue.  How concerned should I be? No cancer in family on either side for three generations.  This is so unnerving. There is no palpable mass and they did not give me any indication on the phone as to why I need to have another ultrasound.

Ultrasound is often ordered following Mammogram. Each test "sees" things differently and also they can each "see" different things. This isn't an unusual occurance at all. You might ask your prescribing Physician to order a "Diagnostic Mammogram" which will be done when the reading Radiologist is present; then if an Ultrasound is required it could be done right then without having to be called back. The fact that you have dense breast tissue may account for the need of the additional testing.    Regards .....
