ultrasound 'probably benign' next step?

I've had an ultrasound because of a palpable, mobile, firm lump on my right breast, at 9:00, 4 cm from nipple.  There

Dear mahitabelle:  Probably benign is terminology that is used when there are no concerning features on the image.  A followup ultrasound will confirm that nothing is changing over time.  Inflammatory breast cancer generally presents as a hot, red, swollen breast.  Bruising is not generally a feature of inflammatory breast cancer.  If you are not comfortable with the advice you have received, a second opinion is an option.  A specialist will likely review the film, conduct a history and physical examination and make recommendations based on these findings.

I'm curious why no mammogram was recommended. A 2 month wait may seem long to you but by most standards this is a routine wait. It's usually a mammogram and then and Ultrasound. I'd question my primary care physicia about this before seeking an appointment with a breast specialist.

Interesting. When I scheduled my 3 month checkup for lumps and calcifications I asked about an ultrasound for my "possible fibroadenomas with slightly irregular borders." I also had a new lump, and they told me I should wait another 3 months (6 months total) because there usually isn't enough change in ultrasounds in 3 months to warrent a new one. I wonder if I got bad advice.

japdip:  I had a mammogram (it was negative) about 6 weeks ago, so that's probably one reason they didn't start there.  I asked them if they could rule out inflammatory breast cancer, which moves really fast, and so far no one's been able to.

montana girl--I don't know anything about any of this, as this is the first time anything weird has happened to me.  One aspect that might be playing in here is my age (I'm 54)--I think that makes a difference in how new lumps are handled?  Maybe?  Also it appearing so quickly after a negative mammo? I didn't know enough about any of this to ask questions. I didn't request the ultrasound, it just got ordered.....hmmm.

Since it happened relatively recently, is it possible that the trauma of your mammogram is what caused the bruising and lump?

Hmmm. That hadn't occurred to me.  Several weeks did go by though, so I don't know if a bruise could suddenly pop up that long after.  And it's not in a place that was squished directly by the mammo procedure.  Interesting idea though.  I have an appointment with a breast specialist (not til the end of November,sigh)--i'll definitely ask him!  thanks.
