ultrasound report

I had breast cancer 6 years ago and had a lumpectomy, chemotheraphy and radiation. I recently found a hardened area under my scar, i went for a mammogram and ultrasound and it reads irregular hypoechoic area and recommends a biopsy. My question is what does hypoechoic mean?

Just want to add my good wishes to you. It might just be scar tissue but only the biopsy will say for sure. I know it's easier said than done, but try to stay positive, take one day and one step at a time. I hope your biopsy goes smoothly with benign results.
Sending you a big hug (    ),

Hi,
On ultrasound, a solid mass appears as a gray or hypoechoic area. In order to decide if the mass is suspicious enough to require further testing, your radiologist will look at the edges of the mass, called the margins. If the margins are smooth and the mass is round or oval, it is most likely benign (not cancer). If the edges are irregular, then a biopsy is necessary to determine if cancer cells are present.
However there are also lumps that have irregular edges but turn up to be benign in nature.
I hope that all goes well with your biopsy and results.
Best wishes...
