waht does all this mean

by poetry36, Sep 27, 2008 02:23PM
I had a neddle biopsy in September they called me back and said they couldn't find anything but they did see some growth but don't know what. I am going for a surgical biopsy for them to remove more of the area to send to the lab. I was told the area of intrest is 1.5 cm and is very small. I am very scared and have no one to talk to or answer my questions. I am starting to make myself very sick by just the waiting and not getting answers.

Hi.

Needle biopsies can be really hard to interpret and there is a really good chance that the actual lesion of interest may be missed by the needle.  For this reason, a larger tissue is needed through the form of an excision biopsy.  The excision would remove the entire questionnable lesion and examined at its entirety to see if there are signs of cancer or not.

The inconclusive needle biopsy does not mean that you are likely to have cancer.  This just means that a larger sample may be needed.  Other clues that can lead to cancer would include tumor characteristics like ragged edges, or lesions associated with an overlying skin dimple.

Regards.
