what follow up is needed after ultrasound discovering a hypoechoic mass?

by SW2, Nov 07, 2009 10:37AM
I recently found a small lump in my breast.  I went in for a mammogram  (done 3 months ago), which was "normal," though dense glandular tissue was noted.  No mass or malignant appearing calcification.  Ultrasound was done to follow up on the lump (6:00 location).

Ultrsound reports states:  "presence of a small hypoechoic mass believed to represent a cyst...measures about 3mm in diameter - no other abnormalities seen...no solid lesions are evident.  Bi-rads category 2..."  (Cat. 2 =benign finding)

I am 49 years old.  I have not had trouble with this area until this week when, during my menstrual period, it became much larger, red, swollen and tender.  I called my GYN but have not heard back from her.  As I am moving out of this week, it seems to be going down a bit, but is not as small as it was when I had the exam.

Here is my concern:  I noted in one of your other replies that you said a hypoechoic mass could be a cyst or could be a malignant mass.  If this could be malignant, why didn't they advise me to have additional follow up?  The report states "believed to be benign".  I am wondering if I need additional follow up.  I have read that some doctors advise a needle aspiration, others do not.  What would you advise & why?

Thank you so much for your time & effort in responding.

Malignant lesions do NOT come and go but cysts and sometimes Fibroadenomas do ... if there were some concern about this being anything but a cyst you would have been referred to another Dr. for follow-up investigation or treatment. Hypoechoic simply means that fewer waves were reflected than would normally be expected and anything can produce either fewer or more echos to be reflected.  Regards ....
