who should take tamoxifen?

who should take tamoxifen?

I am 41 yrs old and was recentley diagnosed with ductal
carcinoma insitu.  I had a mastectomy and sentinal node biopsy.
The lymph node biopsy was negative. I have not had chemo or
radiation. My cancer was non invasive and I am estrogen
receptor positive. Should I take tamoxifen?

Dear Cate, The options for further treatment after surgery in the case of DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) is based on the risk of getting cancer in the other breast.  Having a history of DCIS puts you at higher risk for developing breast cancer in the other breast, especially if it occurred prior to menopause.  Tamoxifen is one option in terms of possible prevention.  Another option is close follow-up.  The decision whether or not to take tamoxifen is ultimately up to you after discussion of the risks and benefits of the alternatives with your physician.
