3 month old congested for a month!

3 month old congested for a month!

so i think its been like a month since my baby started getting congested. i think we had 2 days where she was clear because of the vaporizer i bought, but now shes back to being congested and i have to use those stupid bulb things on her which makes her scream bloody murder. (i just ordered one of those nose sucker things online and should have it in a few days) well my question is that is it possible and my EBF 3 month old has allergies? i do have a dog and have been washing everything very well lately just to see if it helps (and it hasnt) it started out and a little bit of a cold and her ped said just use the bulb thing, prop her up and a humidifier (made it worse so i bought vaporizer) the vaporizer worked wonderfully when she was in her room, especially at night. but after 2 days its not doing its job anymore. its still putting out the same amount of steam but shes still waking up because shes so congested she cant fall back asleep. even during nap time.
she also started spitting up more(she never ever spit up before this) and is now spitting up 2-3 times a day, my diet hasnt changed so im sure its not my breastmilk. im going to call the doctor again tomorrow and make an appointment, but were both getting such rough sleep that shes always tired and spends most of her day trying to sleep. her eating habits are a little off because she often wants to comfort nurse and gets cranky when she has to eat instead of going right to sleep lol. but she seems to be having the same amount of wet/dirty diapers. and shes still gaining weight. i just dont know what could be the problem.

It could be a cold or even allergies as you mentioned.  Another thing that came to mind is teething.  My oldest son, now almost 4 years old, used to get congested when he was going through a bout of teething and I've noticed that my youngers son - now 5 months old - has the same symptom...accompanied by drooling and he's constantly sticking his hands in his mouth or taking our fingers and biting down on them.

It's just an idea.....Both of my sons started teething at 2 months.  My youngest hasn't cut any teeth yet, but with my oldest son, he teethed off and on from 2 months old onward and finally cut his first 2 teeth when he was 6 months old.

If you're still concerned, I'd suggest bringing her in to see the pediatrician.  I hope she feels better soon :-)

In addition to what limonada said, it is actually normal for some babies to be congested for no medical reason. Basically, their nasal passages are so small and narrow, it's easy for them to get stuffy. Think of how many times a day you sniffle or blow your nose just to clear things a bit. You may not be sick or have allergies, but we all do it from time to time. Babies do not have this ability to clear, and combined with the narrow passages, they often end up stuffy. My first was like your little one for several months. Once she got a little older, things got clearer. Now at 3 she is rarely sick and has no allergies, so her current stuffiness is not indicative of future health. My second was less stuffy, but still we did have to use the boogie sucker once or twice a day.
FYI- many advise against using the boogie suckers too frequently, especially if they are not actually sick, because you can further irritate the nasal membranes and actually cause more congestion. If you haven't tried it yet, you can also try saline spray.

I am going to guess her spittting up has to do with postnasal dripping.  My son has a severe allergy to milk and that is how it first shows itself.  He will vomit nothing but mucus (seriously about 2-3 cups).  Its crazy and never thought of it.  It made his gag reflex very sensitive which didn't help.  What helped him was cold rooms or ice cold water (do NOT give water to your baby, but maybe consider cold breastmilk if she will take it).

I suggest that you drip some breastmilk into her nose.  Breastmilk has antimicrobial properties that will help relieve some congestion and make sucking it out easier.  It is not a medication, so you can do it as often as needed.  Its also good for ear infections and eye congestion that antibiotics can make worse.

My friend has a similar problem and it was suggested that she buy a battery operated nose sucker.  Seriously, that things was AWESOME.  It was quick and her baby rarely fussed over it and it was very effective.
