Avent Niplette? Anyone tried it before for inverted nipples?

I was reading a nurse's blog (she is an OB nurse) and she mentioned a product for permanently making flat/inverted nipples stand out to help with breastfeeding. Has anyone heard of or tried "Avent Niplette"?

I've used Avent bottles and pumps in the past with my daughters. I have inverted nipples so breastfeeding them was a challenge; one that I gave up with each of them.

I'm pregnant with our 3rd (due in October) and I just want a better solution to my problem because I really and truly want to breastfeed exclusively. I've tried the shields and cups and other contraptions but they did NOT work for me... so I'm interested in hearing about this particular product if anyone has used it.

Thanks so much!

I've never heard of it. I have one nipple that's inverted and it was SUPER painful when my son latched on to that side at first. Now that my son is 9 months old that nipple stays out pretty much.  I had a nipple shield but didn't find it to be very helpful - I thought it was more awkward than anything else.  I met with a lactation consultant a couple of times and she suggested a few different ways of putting pressure on my breast - the tissue around my nipple to kind of help 'pop' my nipple out and making sure my son's mouth was WIDE open when he latched on to that side.  Good luck!

Thank you!

I didn't mind the shield when I nursed my daughters, but it's a temporary device and they got so used to it that they refused to nurse anymore. I'm hoping that if I do end up trying this product it will be helpful when I have my next baby.

The LC I met with said to even use the nipple shield to get started then after a minute or so the nipple'll be pulled out and should be fine. I still feel like it hurts or feels different on my inverted side than the other.

While I don't have any first hand experience recommending this product, it looks like it would be of use.

Its similar to the advice given to use a breast pump for a few minutes prior to breastfeeding, to draw out the nipples of women with inverted or flat nipples.

Hi Joy, I am busy using the Avent Niplette, I have been using it for exactly one month today. after about a week of using it, my nipples were just flat, rather than inverted. now, even if I don't wear it for a few days, they stay everted (about 1/8 " at first, but now they're even more than that)

It is an absolutely amazing product!I can't tell you how much it has changed my life, my confidence, and undoubtable my ability to breastfeed!

I found these two reviews for the avent:

I found out about this product a few years ago by a plastic surgeon that I went to for a consultation about my invertated nipple. I was told by this surgeon to try the Niplette before I try any procedure because he had customers that found success with it. I left his office and kept the idea of the Niplette in the back of my mind. I didn't buy the Niplette right away because at the time, I was married and my husband didn't mind it. When I got divorced I made the decision to buy it and try it out. What a revalation! I wished that I had bought it the day I found out about it. It is so simple to use and I saw results after 3 days of using it. I am extremely pleased with this product and recommend it to anyone that has an inverted nipple. I had little to no discomfort. I used it at night and also when I went to work. The only thing that I would recommend is using a bra with a thicker pad to mask the bulge of the Niplette. This is a great product and it is definatly worth buying!!! 5 stars all the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Now Have Confidence in Correction!, June 16, 2009
By Mackenzie Adams (Wakefield, RI) - See all my reviews
I have to admit, I was wary of using this product. Not only was I afraid that it would hurt, but I was also very skeptical that suction could treat my severely inverted nipple. I was willing to give it a shot, since the niplette is significantly cheaper than plastic surgery (which is not even guaranteed to correct all inverted nipple problems). My nipple is so inverted that I had never even seen it before using this product! This product is 100% painless, as long as you stop sucking the nipple out if/when it starts feeling uncomfortable (common sense). Safe to use every night though I'm having trouble keeping it on while I'm sleeping.. I may purchase the lubricant they suggest that is meant to keep it in place better (I don't like the idea of wearing a bra to bed). I think it will take some time before my nipple is out all the time (it goes right back in when I take the niplette off and I've been using it for 2+ weeks now). I am seeing improvement, however, since my nipple tissue has been stretched. The nipple has been staying out longer (by a couple minutes) after removing the niplette. I am confident that my problem will eventually be fixed, and that the niplette will stretch my nipple tissue enough to allow the nipple to stay out on its own. I'm sure the niplette works faster for less severe inversions. I think it's worth the money. I am only rating it 4 stars since I have yet to see the nipple out on its own, but then again I haven't even been using it for a month yet so we'll see.

the lansinoh one is called latch assist...

Product Description
Flat nipples due to breast engorgement or swelling are common for nursing moms in the early days of breastfeeding. Flat nipples may make it difficult for your baby to establish a good latch and therefore may make breastfeeding more difficult. In order to nurse effectively, your baby must be able to grasp the nipple and part of the areola for a good latch. Flat nipples make it harder for your baby to correctly position your nipple in her mouth and this can make breastfeeding painful or unsuccessful. The LatchAssistTM is a simple tool to help your nipples temporarily stand out so that it is easier for your baby to establish a good latch, the first step to a successful breastfeeding experience. With gentle, self-controlled suction, the LatchAssistTM will temporarily draw out your nipple so your baby can more easily latch on and breastfeed. LatchAssist can be used quickly and easily with one hand while your baby is in position to breastfeed. Small enough to fit in your diaper bag, the LatchAssistTM can help make breastfeeding easier wherever you go.

Latch Assist is under $10 and the avent is close to $40...it might be worth trying the lansinoh one...

I heard about this while living in Europe. A Dr. recommended I try it before opting for plastic surgery.  I am about to buy it and will let you know how it goes.  Fingers crossed it works as my nipple envy is now becoming a personal confidence issue.

i have never used Avent Niplette before but i have used Pippetop. Pippetop really worked for me. After a month, my nipples slowly started to come out. Now, i have normal nipples. You should try it if you want to breastfeed.
