Baby will only nurse on left breast!

Baby will only nurse on left breast!

My son is 1 month old and as of a couple days ago is learning to breastfeed.  Since he was born I've been pumping and bottle feeding him and also supplementing him with formula.  At the hospital I wasn't able to produce milk yet and had trouble getting him to latch.  So they had me start him on formula supplementation and pumping to bring on my milk.  So for the last month he has learned to love his bottle.

I'm now finally getting him to nurse from me.  Only problem is he only wants to nurse from the left breast.  When we Try to go to the right he just fusses and pulls back wants nothing to do with it.  Go back to he left and he latches much easier.  Any suggestions on what I can do to get him to nurse on the right as well??

I have a little more history about my nursing experience on my previous post "nursing strike". Any suggestions would be so appreciated!

Talk to a lactation specialist.  La Leche League is a great resource, and my pediatrician and ob/gyn had all kinds of referrals.

By the latter, I mean my pediatrician and ob/gyn knew all the lactation specialists available to me on our HMO's plan, and probably that means all pediatricians and ob/gyns have access to such information (so yours will too).  Good luck!

mine had a strong preference for one of the sides. The only way I could get her to latch to the other side was if I used the football hold. Have you tried different positions on that side? Perhaps when he was being bottle fed he was always being held on the same side and is used to being fed on that side? Just a thought. I was able to get her to latch on better during sleepy feeds. Guess she was too tired to argue then. Perhaps you can try that?

I liked tired's suggestions about trying when she is sleeping and using different positions. (She likes to "trick" her baby into nursing the other side) which works really great for a lot of mothers. Also try using the cross cradle hold to sneak baby to the other breast. She may just prefer to be laying on her right side. Keep her right side down and move to the right breast for a cross cradle. It's an easier transition from one breast to the other.

I agree try different positions that helped with my eldest daughter. Now our newborn doesn't have a preference. Usually babies do have a preference for one breast. My eldest ended up taking the left breast for the last 6 months of breastfeeding (I breastfed her until the age of 22-23 months) and refused the right breast.

I have read somewhere and discussed also with a friend that the left breast produces more milk. Has anyone else heard of that??
