Baby wont drink pumped milk- Help!

by wild.blue, Aug 04, 2008 12:12PM
My son is almost a month old now. He refuses to take a bottle of breast milk. He just wants to breast feed. Is there anything I can do to help him feed from the bottle sometimes. I plan to breastfeed him but once in a while it would be nice to have his daddy give him a bottle. any advice?

try different bottle nipples or ones made from different materials.
we got the playtex drop ins starter set that has several bottle sizes and nipples and sometimes she will take one ok and other times we have to fuss with the temperature and the different nipples until she will finally accept one.  It's kind of a hassle but eventually you'll find the right combination.

try having someone else give him the bottle, he may take it from them because he knows you have the good stuff.

With my first dd, she had no problem going back and forth from bottle to breast.  I either breastfed her, or pumped her milk to feed in a bottle.  She had favorite bottles, but for the most part, she was pretty easy to feed either way.  So I expected the same thing when I had my 2nd dd.  Well, she will not take a bottle AT ALL.  I tried every single bottle/nipple I could find on the market, and it just didn't happen.  Other people tried to feed her, and still wouldn't do it.  She is almost a year old and is still breastfed.  I have been able to get her to take the milk out of a sippy cup now that she is older.  So the few times I have had to be gone, she used a sippy cup to drink the pumped milk.  But that didn't start until she was between 4-6 months old.  So, I would try different bottles, but you might just have a baby that prefers the breast!  Oh, and my dd prefers when I feed her solids also.  I guess she just associates her Mommy with food, lol!  Good luck!

I would definitely try different bottle nipples. Jeremiah was pretty easy when it came to breastfeeding and bottle feeding. I use the playtex drop ins and also dr. browns....just recently he has been rejecting the nipple on the dr. browns bottles....so I only use the playtex one now. I think it's softer and more like my nipple I guess! He is so picky now at almost 4 months! He mostly just wants me and that's it. But if I go out, he will take his bottle. Some babies just want the breast and that can be hard, but hopefully you will find the right one!

The only nipple that would work on my daughter was the NUK nipple.  All other nipples got her confused and she ended up hurting me.  The NUK nipple worked perfectly.  Maybe you should try hiding the bottle in your shirt or something, hold the baby in the position you normally do when youre feeding him, but try to trick him and give him the bottle instead.

I agree, try different brands and see if there is one he will take. My three would all only take the Avent pacifier, so we used the Avent bottles and they did great. You may want to have someone else try the bottles with your baby. Sometimes if the baby sees mom or hears mom's voice, they will reject the bottle because they know they could be nursing instead. Best wishes.

Oh, and make sure the breastmilk in the bottle is body temperature too,, since that's what baby is use to. Good way to test is if you shake some drops onto the inside of your wrist and forearm, you should not be able to feel the milk because it is the same temperature.

Try going back and forth from the nipple to the bottle at a few feeding frenzies...Gradually wean him down to just the bottle alone. My daughte would give me the same trouble. We had to start supplementing because my breastmild doesn't have enough calories. She did NOT want that bottle. I started giving her breast for 5 minutes ten and ounce from the bottle. Then switched breast and did the same thing. She started eventually taking to the bottle (about a week and half). Now she takes the bottle 3x a day with no problem and the breast the rest of the time.
