Breastfeeding Woes!

Is it possible to breastfeed with very large breasts and inverted nipples ? I have 3 children, and tried to breastfeed with them, but just got too upset when my nipples wouldn't come out. With this baby, I really want to make an honest effort to breastfeed... I have really huge breasts. Can I still breastfeed even with inverted nipples ?

Yes - I have one inverted nipple and have success with breastfeeding on both sides. I did see a lactation consultant with my first child b/c breastfeeding was hurting and I was told that if it hurts - you're doing something wrong. She suggested using a nipple shield to help 'pull the nipple out' - I did for a while but it was too awkward and I didn't need it anymore.  I'd ask for help right away in the hospital from the nurses and inquire with your baby's pediatrician about getting a referral to a lactation consultant.  Most hospitals have them on staff and they are EXTREMLY helpful.  Good luck to you.
