Breastfeeding

by dpollak2020, Jun 23, 2009 03:05PM
Does anyone here know:

Do breasts weigh significantly less after nursing? Is it ounce for ounce?

Meaning if the breast weighs 3 pounds and 2 ounces and someone nurses one ounce does it now weigh 3 pounds 1 ounce.

Does the milk regenerate while breast feeding. Therefore the breast will still weigh 3 pounds 1.5-2 ounces.

interesting questions...

I was told by my lactation consultant that the breast is constantly producing milk. So I assume that even if the baby takes an ounce, it will not weigh exactly an ounce less since it is producing more milk as the baby nurses.

However, I can say, based on my personal experiences, that the breasts always felt much lighter after expressing milk.

Mine too! And droopier! It always felt so good to nurse or pump and relieve some of that heaviness.

The measurement is fluid ounces, not mass so while you may nurse or express an ounce, it may not weigh an ounce.

It is impossible to really calculate how much you nurse in a session. YOu can really only go by how satiated the baby is.
