if you are able to pump enough for a bottle, then your supply is probably ok. a LC can evaluate how much she is getting at the breast. can you hear her swallow? does she seem satisfied after a feed?
Thanks for the responses. Well I just went to change her diaper and she had pooped a greenish black poop. As I was changing her, the poop starting coming out of her. It was liquidy and greenish black. It smelled bad and like diaharra. I'm still waiting for the doc to call me back. My mom seems to think it is because my milk just came in and the baby is getting used to my milk.
My baby girl had very dark dark green poop the first 2 weeks after she was born. She also was born 7lb 5oz and dropped to 6lb12oz. My Dr wanted me to supplement because my milk was just coming in and not in plentiful supply...I continued to nurse her, and did supplement, but once my milk came in, I started pumping and building up my supply. She will be just fine, keep nursing her every opportunity you have, the more she nurses, the more your milk will build it's supply. Then you will see the mustardy color poop come out. Let me know what your Dr says!
Has you milk come in yet? mine didnt come through until my baby was 6 days old, and when it did her poop changed to the mustard colour but up until that point it was the greenish black colour. Also my daughter had the brick dust that you are talking about, i was advised by my LC to feed her every 2 hours to fix this problem, as soon as she was getting more and my milk came in it went away, stick with the bf it will pay off in the end. at the beginning i thought that i could not do it we had a very challenging first 2 weeks but now we are both pros at it. She feeds more efficiently and is happy.
Hi, I had to use nipple shields,They are a plastic shield that has a large hole in the middle.I would place them in my bra making sure that my nipple was in the hole. It makes your nipples stand out more to help latching on.I got them from the local La Leche League. You can call your Dr or the hospital and they will give you more info. After a few days I was breastfeeding alot more and my milk supply increased ALOT.Don't give up!!!
Make sure you are nursing her long enough, oftentimes they can present with green poo when they are not getting the hindmilk. It is also very possible she is passing the rest of her meconium, which my youngest did beyond the hospital due to elevated bilirubin levels diminishing his appetite.
Nurse every 2 hours minimum around the clock. Nurse for 15 minutes per breast at a minimum. Keep hydrated. but do no over-hydrate. Drink to thirst.
Thanks ladies for the advice and responses. The breastfeeding is getting better. I do have the nipple shields from the hosiptals and have been using them. Her poop has turned to a mustard color now so I think everything is ok. She goes to the doctor tomorow for her first checkup so I'll see what the doctor says.
Sounds great!! She is passing the rest of the meconium which may also help perk her up a bit. Now that her stool is turning yellow, she is probably feeling better. Get ready for explosive poo!
Let us know how she continues to do. Stand your ground with your doctor. She is gaining and has passed the meconium, she is making progress!
