Double pump vs. single?

Double pump vs. single?

Hi ladies...I'm a frequent poster on pregnancy 18-34...I am due in April with my first child and I plan on breast feeding.  I registered for a Medela Swing Single Electric Breast Pump...I plan on breast feeding exclusively for the four months I can be home and then when I return to work, we'll see how pumping fits into my schedule...SO, question is, is a single pump okay?  AND how long do you need to pump at a time?  I am a teacher...my day is about 6 1/2 hours...I get a lunch break (only 30 minutes) and sometimes a planning period which I use every second of to copy, correct, plan, organize...so I have very little time that I could devote to pumping =(  Does this sound like it will work?

Double pumps are very nice (I use one at home) but to be honest at work I just bring a single hand pump with me.  It takes me about 10 minutes to pump 4 ounces or so (5 min. per side and 2 oz per side).  I just don't feel like sitting there much longer than that or I could get more milk.  If you have a half hour that should be enough time especially with an electric pump.  If you are working fulltime you might want to try to get in more than one pumping session a day but you will figure out what you can do once  you go back.  Good luck - breastfeeding and working can be difficult but I have found it to also be very rewarding. :)

I use a Medela double electric but usually just do one side at a time. It takes me about 10 minutes to pump 4 oz - same as the above member. Remember that the more you pump, the more milk you will produce. Only pump as much as your baby needs. I highly suggest you start pumping a few weeks before returning to work, because it's hard to know how much baby is eating when you're nursing. Additionally, you'll want time to find a bottle/nipple that your baby likes. Also, you should start "stock piling" milk in the freezer before returning to work - that way you always have a stash on hand. Your 30 minute lunch break should be enough - try not to go more than 4 hours without pumping to keep your supply up, and to alleviate discomfort.
