Fast letdown=fussy/gassy?

Fast letdown=fussy/gassy?

From the start Brady has been very gassy. He is 13 weeks this week and it's still going on. He's almost extra fussy. (could be early teething, on top of gassiness).
I've been reading up on fast letdown and I believe this may be the problem. There are signs of it that we have such as gulping, coming off of the breast frequently and when he comes off for a second I'm still flowing and it gets on his face and runs down on his shoulder or down my sides. I also get really full when missing feeding/at night time.
What can I do? He usually eats every 2 hours and just one breast at a time. So I've been thinking of feeding from one breast and the same one for half the day and maybe the other breast the next half. I just don't know how to handle this, especially since I get crazy full and leaky if I miss a feeding on one side!
HELP!! I feel so helpless when he's gassy. We use the oval or gas drops of some sort but I don't want him dependent on them.

I think that you are feeding from 1 side for several feeds may be causing too much to build up one one side, resulting in the forceful let-down. Are you feeding from the same side for several consecutive feeds? What if you worked your way to alternating breasts between the feeds. That way you don't have more than 4 hours since that side was fed off of.

You can also try some tricks like holding the baby upright while feeding so it's not shooting down his throat as much. And you can stop and burp frequently. I think that milk supplies tend to regulate soon, so hopefully adjusting your feeding schedule to alternating breasts each feed will help calm things down.

I already feed him that way though. I feed him from the left side for one feed, then the right for the next and keep going. I almost never get it mixed up because I can tell which one is usually full. I already feed him upright. I've read to do it with his head obviously higher than his stomach. I haven't tried burping him in between yet but that's because when he comes off...the milk just keeps on a flowing! LOL Sometimes it's so fast that he will do the choke/gag too. I also try to feed as reclined back as I can. Just not sure what other steps I can take. I gave him a bottle of formula the other day and he still gulped that back like he would on me, he was frustrated with a slower nipple so I used variable flow with him.

you are are on the right track for block feeding, That is always the next plan of action. First being one side a feed whcihc you already do like me. Now I would nto go a whole half a day! I would go 2-3 feeds at first a side for 4-5 days then go back to the one side a feed and see if that helps. Now if you just had a growth spurt and only have extra milk at the moment then you do not do this. Gorwth spurts are like that for 1-2 days at first then go abck to normal. I do not se this being you but wanted to put that in for if someone else was ready this. So the blovk feeds are the key things right now, holding baby up and you leaning back some so he draws the milk away from you I hear helps but I could not master this hold, maybe you can have mroe luck with it, or them laying directly on top on you basically which I could not master either. I have large breasts is maybe why IDK.

Yes the extra stimulated letdown you have will cause fussiness and can also lead to baby not wanting the breast so take action and it will work, well should! I have an oversupply along with super stimulated let down but it does get better as baby gets older as far as them getting used to it. This morning I was so hard and sore after he ate I pumped off 5 oz with a manual pump. I have not had to do this in a long time and just let it go if I have extra.

Kuddos to you for remembering what side you fed on!!!! I am nursing my 4th baby, he is 7 months and I have such a hard time remembering! I have tried the braclet, laying the burp cloth on the side I just fed from on my nursing chair, a pin on my bra. Nothing has worked except for me writing it down but I forget to do that half the time so I just le *** go. It has not been good for my over supply either. I think that is why I had so much milk this morning for me forgetting and feeding on the wrong side one to many times:) LOL

Well I would definetly say the letdown and not teething from what your described. Hope it helps you quick!

Oh if after the time is up 4-5 days if it is not better you go an extra feed at a time or two for another 4-5 days but I'd say it will work. It does tend to come back after the first time block feeding, I had to go for another round after a week of things doing better. But the second time worked good.

I did the block feedings and it helped a LOT Ellie would open her mouth to BF and it would shoot out of my breast and down the back of her throat I could hear splash back and if I pumped I would get 6oz per side (my daughter is only 2 weeks old and eats 2oz every 2hrs). Now she can feed without drowning in my milk :)

I had an abundance of milk until my boy was 18 weeks, I had to sleep with a bath towel folded under my top at night and had to change it 2-3 times (a night!) I could not master feeding laying down or with bub upright so had to deal with him getting slot of wind and scoffing a feed... I would let my breasts leak a bit onto a towel so he was not getting as much foremilk as I was told it contributes to wind and then letting him more hindmilk, also for comfort I had to express in the shower so I wasn't as full! ( even though this tricked my body and made me produce more!)

There is no easy solution but I hope your milk eases up soon!
