Is my 8week old getting enough BM?

Is my 8week old getting enough BM?

Hello ladies,

My baby girl will be 8 weeks and 5 days on Monday. Yesterday I was breastfeeding her and at first she was fine drinking away, but like 20 minutes into the feeding she started getting shaky(sp), nervous like and started taking her mouth away from my nipple but then she would look for it again. Does this mean I'm not producing enough milk, and leaves her looking for more?  I switched her to the other breast and she did the same thing.  I want her to be a breast fed baby, I don't want to wean her from it just yet.  Also after I "fed" her she got very fussy.  She was having a hard time going to sleep.  I mean she would sleep but then wake up 10 minutes or so after.  Is my breast milk causing her to be like this or she just wants more and I can't give it to her?

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks ladies.

Can you hear her swallowing?  Listen for that and you'll know she's consuming.  If you massage your breast that'll help with the let down and get the milk out.  The only way to know how much milk your baby is getting is to weigh her before and after...  How have things gone since yesterday when she was 'shaky' and 'nervous'?  Good luck with things!

Hi i used to wonder the same thing!

If your baby is wetting more than 5 nappies a day and is putting on weight she should be getting enough.  Could have been wind that was troubling her, make sure you give her the opportunity to bring up her upper wind..Dunstan baby language says i they make he sound "eh" or air when theycry and they also pull away from the breast voluntarily when they need to be burped.

They have a growth spurt about 8 weeks.  I your baby wa nts more milk you must keep putting her back on the breast as this will make you produce enough milk for her growing needs, that's how breastfeeding works.

Best of luck

Hi,

your baby will definitely be getting enough milk if you are feeding on demand.  If she wants more she will suck more and then your breasts will produce more. Yes, that's the way it works.

No need to think of weaning.  Breast milk should be your baby's main food for her first year of life, and longer if it suits you both.

I would guess she was a bit fussy for reasons other than getting enough.  Maybe a bit colicky, or as another person suggested here there is a growth spurt around the 8 weeks mark.

Keep at it and congratulations on your daughter.

Thank you guys.  I switched her formula from Enfamil to Good Start.  She is doing much better and when she has the breast milk she no longer fusses.  I'm so happy.  I think it was the enfamil that was making her do all those things.  After I give her breast milk I give her 1 or 2oz of the formula.
