Medication and Breasfeeding

Does anyone take medication for blood pressure and still breastfeed?  I have been on Procardia XL for BP maintenance for years and will continue after my baby is born.  I just wondered if I'll be able to safely breastfeed or not.  Any info would be greatly appreciated!

This is a question best suited for your pharmacist, OB, and pediatrician.

I will say the information I found online points to it being of significant concern to take it while pregnant, recent studies have pointed to the possibility of birth defects as a result of using Procardia while pregnant.

If it turns out Procardia is not a good choice, have you looked into alternative medications? There may be a med you can take while nursing that will be effective enough to use until you wean and go back on Procardia.

I had been taking Lotrel which is extremely harmful to take while pregnant, breasfeeding, etc. and was prescribed Procardia by my physician, a high risk pregnancy specialist.  You're right, it's probably a quesiton for him but unfortunately I forgot to ask at my last appt along with my other 100 questions :-)  Nest time!!
