Milk Production

Milk Production

My daughter is 3 weeks old and i have been strictly breastfeeding from day one.  Lately i have been pumping once a day and giving her a bottle to get her ready for when i go back to work.  I noticed when pumping that on my right breast i am getting 3 oz, but on the left side i am only getting 1 oz.  My daughter nevers seems to go hungry and i know that i am going to produce milk based on demand, but is there a way to up my supply on the side that isn't producing as well?  After my daughter is done eating i always pump to make sure that they are completely empty so that i will produce more, but nothing seems to be helping on the one side.  I just want to make sure that i am going to be able to give my daughter breastmilk as long as possible.

it is very normal for your breasts to produce different amounts. Your baby may be getting more than 1 oz out of the left side- babies are often more effective than the pump. If you really want to attempt to even them out, you can try to pump the left side a little more.
By the way, it takes some time for supply to increase. You may not see changes due to extra pumping for a week or 2. But be careful- if you are primarily nursing and she's getting enough, too much pumping can cause over-supply. Also, keep in mind that as you nurse longer and your hormones change, the amount each breast produces will change often.
good luck- sounds like you're doing very well so far!
