Pain while bfing and pumping

by NicMom, Aug 26, 2009 11:56AM
It hurts to pump and nurse although nursing is way worse. I'm using the Lanoish nipple balm. Does anyone know how long it lasts? I have a cracked nipple on one side and that doesn't help. I'm looking for light at the end of the tunnel here please tell me this goes away.

I have had a lot of pain, too.  My nipples would even bleed while he nursed.  It got a lot better at about 3 weeks, though its not completely pain-free yet. = )

It is definitely NOT easy, but it does get easier.  Hang in there, time will fly!

Is it only the cracked nipple that hurts or is there more/other pain?

I have an inverted nipple on one side and I kind of got used to the pain...  I have no idea when it stopped hurting -sorry!  I had a nurse in the hospital tell me (and I'll never forget) that nursing is "toe curling pain" -but then a lactation consultant said if it hurts you're doing something wrong...  See if you can contact a LC near you and see if that helps...  It won't always hurt - best of luck! And good for you for keeping with it!

The cracked nipple is really the only bad part. Other than that I still have some aches and pains in my breasts most often when I don't nurse or pump enough.

could it be thrush?

Sounds like it's just your body getting used to being tugged and pulled on.  Keep using lanolin and stick with it - it will get better!  You could always contact a LC and they can watch you nurse to double check there is a good latch and things like that...?

the lanolin has been helping me a lot. honestly, i am still on a lot of pain meds from the c-sec and i think that helps too. Nipple shells combined with lanolin help heal sores and cracks quickly- they keep fabric off the nipple and allow air to circulate that promotes healing.

i am actually posting a question about what has helped the most. i'm not advocating it because i don't know if it's ok. basically, i am feeding off only 1 boob at a time. so each boob can get up to 6 hours without nursing to heal. i think it's ok because she is gaining quickly, but i am always lopsided.

by the wy, if pumping is aggrevating it, you may be using the wrong sized horn or have suction too high. another great tip was to lube up the base of the nipple with a little olive oil (safe- does not need to be wiped off). it greatly reduces friction

So last night I put extra lanolin on my nipple before pumping and it seemed to help. Apparently I have one huge nipple and one normal one so I'm already using the 30mm shell. It's getting better only now since I didn't pump enough yesterday because it hurt so bad I have one boob thats engorged. I keep using heat before I pump and ice after it''s slowly going down, but jesh it hurts.

Sounds somewhat normal...keep up with the lanolin, it should help!
