Problem with Breatfeeding and new teeth

by Momofthreecrazykids, Oct 22, 2009 06:52AM
Hi, I'm new on this forum and had a friend recommend that I come on here for my question.

I'm a mother of 4.  I have a 5 year old son, Twin 3 year old girls and a 8 month old.  I've exclusively breastfed all my kids.  Timmy for 9 months until his surgery, the twins for 21 months until I got Pregnant with Myra.

I'm having a horrible problem with 8 month old.  I had this happen to me once before with my youngest twin, Ashlynd.  As the top teeth start to grow in more and more, they cut through my nipple.  Literally CUT THROUGH!  I seen my OB after Ashlynd did this and he told me to see the Ped. for it.  I know why he wanted to go there, just to see why she's doing that.  But I had this discussion with the Ped. once before that problem happened.
When Ashylnd was just a baby, I noticed the roof of her mouth had two sets of gums.  The Ped. told me that everyone has this....Not me, my husband, my son or Abby has it.  The Roof of Ashlynd's mouth was SO so tiny and I couldn't get my nipple in her mouth right without her teeth cutting my nipple.

I'm going through the same thing with Myra.  I have NO clue what to do.  Instead of having Myra feed on one breast like the twins had too, she's got both she's feeding from.  And its happening on both nipples.  It hurts SO SO bad.  I know it's just going to keep getting worse with her top teeth through now.  When Ashlynd did it to me, the cut went half way though my nipple, not fun!!  I'm PRAYING Myra gets used to her teeth and not do what her sister did to me.

But has anyone had this happen to them before?  I've been bitten and scratched on my nipples, but to have a tooth literally grow into your nipple over time, it's far worse then anything like a bite!

I have no clue who to talk to, or see about this because nobody seems to know what to do.
Thanks-
Brandi

i would consult a LC. Maybe she can help? The only thought i had was to maybe try a nipple shield, but i don't know for sure if that's a good solution long term- a LC could advise you about that. Since it's a physiological thing and not behavioral, i'm not sure you can train her to not do it.

you've got me a bit nervous- my lc just told me my 2 month old has a small mouth too. hope i'm not in for the same thing.

How often do you vary the positions while feeding? They may also be a good option as well. Try side lying for some of the feed, cross cradle for another part, maybe finish with the football hold.

Consulting an LC would be a good idea as well.

Try pumping exclusively and give your kiddo a bottle. That way she can still get breastmilk but you wont be in pain. I know it might be difficult to give up that special bonding time, but at least you won't be hurt.

I REFUSE a bottle!  Never gave my children a pacifier or a bottle, just something I don't want them to have.  I'm thinking It's time for her to get her sippy cup out.  She's too old to start a bottle.

I don't have a LC available in my area.  The hospital I go to, she left a coupe years ago.  And when this happened this my twins, she couldn't help me either.

I've tried different positions, switching all the time, but its like her teeth scrap back and forth no matter what.  (Bottom teeth, top teeth)  Its painful!

Its funny doctors, nurses, WIC, LC talk you into breastfeeding and tell you to call with a question, but when you have something like this happening, they can't help.

I figured nobody can help, it's probably time to wean.  She hates baby food (gerber) so I just dice up food we eat and she's completely happy with that.  I've also gave her milk in a sippy cup and she does good.

You ever get your nipples hurting so bad, that your breast doesn't want to make milk?  That's whats happening with me.

Thank you for all the help and hope nobody ever goes through this.  Doctors don't even know what to do!?!
