Saving breast milk

by kylesMom09, May 29, 2009 07:42AM
I had my daughter 2 1/2 weeks ago and have been nursing the whole time and pumping after my baby is done eating.  I have been freezing all the milk I pump and i noticed that the milk from when we first came home is orange in color.  I would assume that it is because it was still mainly colostrum at that point, so should i get rid of this milk or will it be ok to feed to my daughter at a later time?

NO, don't get rid of it, It's prefectly fine.  When you freeze milk it will turn that color, sometimes it will turn yellowish too.  I work in a hospital and they tell the mothers that breast milk is "Liquid Gold".

Also if your eat beets it will turn your milk a pinkish color, it will also turn your milk a little green if you eat a lot of green veggies (dark greens) like collard greens, spanish.

I've been pumping/freezing for several months and realized the milk is all kind of different shades of white and such.  I think the content of the milk changes as your baby ages to ensure the baby gets what it needs at different points of it's development.
