Sometimes, especially when the going gets tough, it is nice to look back at the positives of nursing. Why don't you share with us your most treasured nursing memoryMemory loss Mental status tests or memoriesMemory loss Mental status tests so that perhaps we could inspire others to keep pushing through.
I love how healthy it keeps my baby. It doesn't matter how sick I have gotten, my little ones almost never get sick while I'm nursing. Perfect example is when we went on a cruise around the Hawaiian islands. I was pregnant with my 3rd, and still nursing my at the time 15 month old. My oldest came down with a nasty bug and was sick for 2 days. Then my husband came down with it, and finally myself. It was the worst trip. The only person who did not get sick was my dd who was nursing still!
You just can't buy that in a can. It is a lot of work, and after 3 babies I'm so exhausted with all the nursing. But it really is worth it! Breastfeeding for at least the first year really gives them the chance to build up a strong immune system. None of my kids have even had to go to the doctor for anything other than well child check ups.
My dd is not much of a cuddler, never has been. Too much to see and do, I guess. So when she nursed, I loved the quiet time, just being able to hold her close and snuggle.
I think nursing is the ultimate connection and bond between mother and child. To know that our bodies are capable of providing and producing a food source that is responsible for our babies existence is beyond comprehension to me...it is such a beautiful, remarkable experience.
i remember with my son, he was just months old, i came home from work. i went to nurse him after a long day away from him and he smiled while nursing, sighed a happy sigh, and closed his eyes. he is now 11 and ill never forget that!
the funniest i remember is with my dd. she was maybe 14 months old. dh and i were sleeping with addy in the middle of us. she woke up to nurse and i didnt respond instantly, so she wound up her b sound and yelled boobie!!! we laughed so hard!
breastfeeding has been very challenging, but to me, it is not an option. I have been blessed with a good supply, so be it by nursing or bottlefeeding ebm, my baby will get milk as long as I can manage. the past few days have been a bit better though :)
anyways, i don't have warm fuzzy memories yet. however, like houseofgirls, i credit breastmilk with my kids' health. my first was born 4 weeks early at 4 lbs 13 oz and went from 3rd percentile to 75th in 2 or 3 months. Miraculous, in my opinion. Despite being in daycare as an infant, she was rarely sick and never seriously. She's freakin brilliant. Yes, i know she would've done well on formula, but i know that she's even healthier and smarter because of breastmilk.
this little one is following in her sister's footsteps. She's up to 90th percentile for weight at 9 weeks old (up from 30th at birth). my ped said she's gaining more than would be expected, but that's ok. My LC said she's gaining exactly like a breastfed baby should- very rapidly in the first 3 months, and then will slow.
I've been thinking about this subject a lot. With each of my girls, there was something different and special about nursing them. Right now, with Cassandra, I love when her little hand rubs my stomach while she is nursing. She is just a little sweetheart. I am doing my best to cherish this time with her...she is my last baby. I can't believe she is already over 6 months old!
