Spitting up after feeding

Spitting up after feeding

I just had my son three weeks ago and lately every time I feed him he spits up. I burp him wheni change breasts and after he's done and sometimes he burps sometimes he doesn't. Then he calls asleep so I lay him down and he spits up in his sleep. A few times I've been holding him upright and he still spits up. Is this normal or is there something I'm doing wrong?

Is he nursing longer now or cluster feeding?  Sometimes when they take in more they spit up for a few days as their tummy gets used to it. Does he have any other symptoms like arching his back fussy pulling his knees to his chest?  That's what Ellie did which is classic GERD (reflux) one thing that helped was putting her bed at a 30 degree angle to help work with gravity to keep things down. And keeping her upright after feedings for 30 min but you could try even 10min and see if that helps. Congrats again on your handsome little man!!!

Sounds like it could be reflux. Have you discussed it with your paediatrician. There are alot of mums here that can give you alot of good advice, you're in good hands :-D

Thank you. No he doesn't fuss or anything he just gets a goofy look on his face first then spits. And he's started eating farther apart and longer now. So hopefully it's just his tummy getting used to it.

He could just be overeating as well. Try breaking the latch a little sooner and seeing if that helps it at all. Some babies love to nurse and overeat and make themselves sick.

If he isn't burping well, that's probably the cause. You may need to try different positions to get the burps out. Many find sitting the baby upright on their laps, supporting the chin btw the thumb and index finger works, while you pat his back. A little bounce on the knee may help as well. The traditional burping on the shoulder didn't always work.
You can also try simethicone (brand name mylicon). These infant gas drops help bind all of the little bubbles in the tummy together, making them easier to pass. Many people find they help tremendously, and it is considered safe for baby. You can usually find it in the baby section of the store, but you can also ask your pharmacist if you have trouble finding it. Generic is just as good as brand name in this case, as it has been around for a long time.

Some babies just spit up. My daughter had great burps after feeding and she always spit up. She lived in a bib for the first 4months. Her doctor said there was nothing wrong and its normal for some. I always burped her, kept her upright after eating and she did not over eat at all! I would suggest bringing it up to the doc and just doing your best to burp him, but after all that dont stress if hes just one of those babies that spits :)

Thank you everyone. We asked his dr at his checkup on friday and she said that he might have reflux so to sit him upright for 20 to 30 minutes after eating. Which i already was doing on he would still spit up sometimes an hour even after he ate. But she said that as long as he keeps gaining weight like he has been that its fine and not to worry too much. Thanks again! Im still getting used to nursing and everything that comes with being a new mom :)

Hi my doctor told me the same thing but my lactation specialist said most newborns have problems with dairy. I pulled all dairy out of my diet and the problem is almost gone!! ( one day later I could tell a difference!) Not sure why doctors don't tell you this but when you read up on it you find the dairy issue with newborns. I know she told me them same thing but weight gain or not spitting up is no fun for them or me!! Stopping dairy is way worth it!
