Thrush???

Thrush???

My son was born on March 15th and he is exclusively BF.  I've noticed the past few days that he has white patches in his mouth on his gums.  I'm not sure if this is something to be concerned with.  If it is thrush is there any other symptoms he would be showing me?  My breasts are a little tender, but I wouldn't say they are painful.  I EBF my daughter for 14 months, but I never dealt with anything like this so any thoughts would be appreciated.

My ped took a tongue depressor and scraped gently at the white. When it came up, he said that it was just a milky film. Thrush would not come up when scraped. Can you try wiping it gently with a cloth to see if it comes off?

babies cant brush their gum but you can take a cloth with sterile water and wipe the inside of his mouth use your pinkie...and make sure every time you feed him you wipe your breast and after you feed him..and cover with a clean breast pad every time..that will happen to my son when he was a baby and it helped a lot.

If it is thrush he will not show any other symptoms. We had thrush twice and it didn't affect my DD directly but I hurt like h*ll! It affected me because I would change the way I nursed, made me not want to nurse and I would nurse stressed out. It took me 2 weeks to figure it out because my mother in law kept saying I was just tender and I needed to get used to the sucking. That is not true! BF should never hurt. It is one thing to be a little tender after, but it should not hurt while feeding. Also, when I had thrush my nipples burned after a feeding for about an hour. That was when I finally went to the doctor.
If you think your baby has thrush it's safest to take him to the doctor. They will give you a medication to rub on the baby's tongue and cheeks and on your nipples. I felt better after 2 applications of the medicine. If you are having pain while nursing or getting sore or cracked nipples call your lactation consultant because if it is not thrush there may be a problem with the latch.
