Weening

by ImmortalOne, Jun 23, 2008 11:19PM
When did you ween your baby?  How do you ween a baby?  My first two stopped nursing because my supply ran out.  While it has gone down now, it certainly is still there.  She nurses all night (co-sleeping) and will demand to be nursed when I get home (flopping herself to the side where a breast is while in my arms).

I don't want to ween really, but with these new teeth my nipples feel like they have been washed with sandpaper!  They are so sore its crazy - almost worse than when we had thrush!  If I don't ween does anyone have advice on how to curb the biting at the breast?  We believe strongly in Attachment Parenting, so this is something new and we are exploring avenues.

You can try the no-no method. At least that is what I call it. When baby uses teeth, you quickly release them from the breast, tell them no-no hurt bad. But end breast feeding. Let them know that biting is not allowed. Then wait about a half hour and try to feed again. Everytime baby tries to bite say the same exact thing and end feeding. They will soon get the idea that biting during feeding time is bad and hopefully this will reinforce that biting is bad period.

With my first two babies I, loudly and firmly, said "No biting" and ended the session by taking them off and setting them down on the floor in front of the chair we were sitting in. They got the message very quickly. My first one never bit again. The second would get a funny look on her face just as she was thinking about biting, so I would release her off and firmly tell her "No biting." That only took a few times too. They never bit again after that because they didn't want to be taken off and have their session ended.
