No, this is not normal - it usually means that your baby is not latching correctly.  Her latch is probably too shallow - which means that is hurts you and that she is not getting the mild properly.  Has someone helped you get her to latch correctly?  I strongly suggest a lactation consultant - La Leche League offers free breastfeeding help.

I know how you feel, as this happened to me.  Those first few weeks of breast feeding were so, so hard.  It does get better, I promise.

In the meantime, you need to let your nipples heal.  I pumped for a few days to allow my nipples to heal - do you have a pump?  I also recommend soaking your nipples in some warm water with a little bit of salt (my lactation consultant told me to do this).  Do this at least 3 times a day.  Lanolin also really helps.

Hang in there.

First, to soak your nipple, but the salt water in the cap of a bottle (or a small bowl), then just lean over and dip your nipple into it.

What kind of pump are you using? Is it on the maximum speed?

I would rub a little bit of olive oil on your areola and nipple before pumping - this did wonders for me to make pumping more comfortable.

If you are using the wrong size flange (horn) on the breast pump it can cause this as well

OMG get a new pump!!!!!!!! I had this pump for the first 5 weeks and it was the worst purchase i have ever made! It is def your pump and the speed (highest) at which you are pumping. After about 3 weeks the motor on my pump started to go out. I would set it higher just to get that old suction back and i swear my nipples felt like they were being ripped off.

I hated this pump. It was part of the reason why i wanted to stop breastfeeding. I went out and purchased a hand pump and used it DIRECTLY after using the MiPump and got a full bottle out of my breast.

I'd suggest lanolin cream before/during/after pumping and leaving a little bit of breast milk on your nipple to help it heal. In the meantime i would HIGHLY recommend getting a new pump.

I'm so sorry you are going through this sister. Breastfeeding should never hurt. If it does or if there is damage to the nipple or areola afterwards, first we want to make sure the baby is latched properly.

To do this, in a cradle position, you want to make sure the baby's chest is turned in towards your chest, the ears, shoulders, and hips are all aligned. Next make sure the baby is taking in plenty of areola and the baby doesn't have to turn her neck in order to breastfeed. (This can cause extra trauma to your nipple and can make swallowing very difficult for baby)

Next we would look at the flange sizes. You can order PersonalFit Breastshields from Medela (and I would also look into investing in a Medela pump by renting hospital grade or buying an electric personal Medela)
I’m so proud you are continuing to breastfeed, despite your pain. I hope that things will get easier for you soon. You will always have the help and support you need here.

Eesh! So it is the pump? :( You poor thing! Yes, definately look into Medela PersonalFit flanges.

You may try holding off on using the pump (and keeping the baby exclusively to the breast, along w/ hand expression) until your breasts have healed and you've invested in a better pump.

I am just so sorry you had to go through all of this. :(
