The baby will teach you. You snuggle up to him, put your nipple in his mouth, and he is in seventh heaven. Start on one breast and finish with the other. In the first weeks of his life feed him whenever he cries. Breast feeding is so easy that I have no idea why anyone would dream of getting up in the middle of the night, warming a bottle (all the while the baby is crying with hunger). Then you hold it, burp it, and lose lots of sleep. But we breast feeders stumble to the crib, pick up that sweet smelling new life, tuck it in bed with us, and wake in the morning smiling.

Take a lactation class, ask your nurse or ob-gyn for a referral or call La Leche League.

I liked allmymarbles suggestion on how to feed your baby. (baby will teach you) This works especially well for a prone position (laying on your back w/ baby on your chest). The baby will start to crawl towards the breast and will bob their little head towards your nipple (Search “Breast Crawl”) another “go with the flow” technique is “feeding on demand”. You want to feed your baby when they are hungry instead of trying to feed on a schedule, since babies have growth spurts and their needs continue to change.

If you would like to try other common positions such as the cradle hold, football hold, cross-cradle, and side-laying. You will only need to make sure that while using these positions, your baby is turned in towards your body and the ears, shoulders, and hips are all aligned (this is important as to not cause additional nipple trauma and to make sure there aren’t any restrictions while your baby is trying to swallow)

Bring the baby IN towards your breast once the mouth is open wide (like a yawn) taking in plenty of areola/breast as well as nipple. *breastfeeding, not nipple feeding.
