my baby is constantly spitting up/ throwing up what is this?

Hi,
Since my bb was about 2 weeks old he has been throwing up we have tried so many things and nothing has helped. he is 7 weeks now and here is his routine drinks about 75ml we hold me up on the shoulder for 30-50mins he sometimes burps and sometimes he doesnt. then when we put him down he sleeps for abt 10-20mins and awakes up spitting up sometimes it just liquid and others is curded. than he has the hick ups and if lucky he goes back to sleep if not he is hungry again. we have gone to the doc twice and both times they dismiss it has being normal. i mean is it really normal we go through about 5 soaked bibs at each feeding. and the constant feeding and holding up is driving us crazy. he is putting on waiting fine and no blood in stool or anything. what is this? could it be that since he was 2 weeks i have been on antibiotics 1st for matitis and now for yeast infection. we thought it was gre but the doc says not since his spitting up does not project outwards. any advice on what to do???

This is called gastroesophageal reflux. Call your pediatrician, there are meds to stop it. My daughter went through this. They use to give Reglan, but I believe there is a new drug now.

Ask the doc if you can feed him in front of him, thats what we had to do with my daughter.

It appears as though it is reflux. Take your son to his paediatrician who will make a diagnosis and help treat it with the appropriate medication.

I had a yeast infection as well and took antibiotics and they would not prescribe them if they would in any way harm your baby.

Good luck.

honestly, if he is gaining properly, and he is not in pain from acid reflux, then they probably won't do anything but categorize him as a "happy spitter." Some kids are just like that. You would know if it was acid reflux- your life would be a nightmare with a child who screams in pain all day long. And while it is rough, I would personally avoid meds like reglan. They can be useful for children who are having trouble gaining and thriving, but since yours is, i'd stay away from it since there is concern about the effects of it. Usually, meds like that are used when the benefit outweighs the risks.

The meds you took would not cause this. It's just a matter of maturity for his digestive system. If you see any signs of pain or weight loss, then keep pushing. Try googling "happy spitter" and you will see what I am talking about.

I also often read that it looks like more than it is when they spit up. My first used to soak bibs because she couldn't feed properly (excessive dribbling due to poor coordination and seal). Since we had concerns about her weight, we actually started to weigh the bib or burp clothe that she soaked to give us peace of mind about how much she was losing. We just used a sensitive food scale.

My baby is 8 weeks old.  He had to switch from Enfamil Lipil which he did fine on to Enfamil Premium which hurt his stomach.  The doctor then switched him to Enfamil Gentlease which made him feel better but he began spitting up more than usual.  He doesn't seem to be sick but just spits up a signifcant amount after eating.  I am reading many other posts with similar problems.  I am going to call the doctor Monday to see what his prognosis is.  I am just glad that the gas and bloating are gone, but I don't want the spitting up to become a major problem.
