Are you still talking with the certified lactation consultant? Are you drinking plenty of fluids and staying hydrated? What did the consultant say about your baby's latch? How often does baby nurse and are you also pumping? Sorry, lots of questions . . one more, are you supplementing with formula until your milk comes in? You may want to check back with the certified lactation consultant soon to see what else she recommends. Sounds like you and your baby need more lactation appointments to try more strategies. Best wishes.

I have two friends that tried nursing and weren't able to.  One baby was born 5 weeks early by c-section and the other was born 6 weeks early by c-section.  One mother said her boobs got full and appeared full but they coudn't get anything out.  The other gal would pump and pump and pump and just fill the bottom of the bottles.  I wish you good luck but really - some women just aren't able to through no fault of their own.  Don't beat yourself up about it.

I agree, the lactation consultant is the best option here.

Just yesterday I took care of a mom who said with her last baby, she had little milk until 8-10 weeks after delivery.

She saw a lactation consultant and a program was devised for her that included frequent nursing followed by supplementation (her baby was severely underweight), pumping after each feeding, increasing fluids, and "a medication" (my patient didn't remember what it was exactly, but there are some common ones the LC can recommend).

She said by 3 months she finally had an adequate supply and stopped supplementing.

I echo every here.  See a Certified Lactation Consultant right away.  Don't give up!

my dd's caregiver was unable to produce milk at first. she tried every pump out there and couldn't get a drop. she gave up. after a couple of months it really got to her, and she sought help. by 8 months post partum she started nursing full time, and continued for years. i do not recall how she did it, but i know she got help.

i also wanted to let you know i can somewhat understand what it is like for breastfeeding to not go as planned. it's heartbreaking, even though you know rationally that you are doing the best you can, it's very difficult to accept that some factors are beyond your control. you are not alone. i honestly feel that there is still some hope. this is a good place to get responses about breastfeeding success. we will encourage and support you and give you any advice we can.

if you feel alone and need to talk to someone who had similar problems, you may want to repost this question on the maternal and child forum. many women on there tried breastfeeding but it did not work out (which is why they are not here). i am not telling you to give up- like i said it may still work out and we will help you every step of the way. but the emotional turmoil that accompanies the process is very overwhelming and it may help to share stories with people who have gone through these emotions and difficulties.

good luck and keep us updated.

Find a lactation consultant TODAY! and get a supplemental nursing system to feed your baby formula while he nurses. There is still hope, but it is going to take a lot of work. You can do it and the sooner the better!

also, how often are you trying nurse and/or pump? If your milk is going to come in, you need to stimulate the nipples as much as possible. comfort nurse as much as possible to keep the nipple stimulated and to keep the baby interested. even if the baby isn't getting milk, any contact with the breast is good.
have you been able to find a lactation consultant? i found mine through my daughter's ped. she was amazing. you can also contact your local La Leche League.

Ive been on Motilium for 7 weeks and its really helped. Hopefully it will work for you also. I was in exactly your predicament. I was hoping to exclusively breastfeed but my sons not gaining weight so I have to supplement, at least temperarily. Im considering using a supplyline too so I can still breastfeed even when he has to have formula. Have you heard of this? What country are you in. Im in Australia and the ABA has been of a great support to me. I would also definately recommend getting help/ advice from a lact counsellor.
The more you nurse your baby the more signals sent to ur brain that will make more milk. A baby will also try and increase your supply as their appetite/ need for more nutrition grows. Also drink plenty of fluids. Try and have a full drink everytime (at least) that you feed you baby.

Feel free to ask any questions as we are going throught he same thing.

Has anyone evaluated the baby's suck? Could there be oral problems with the baby? Is he getting pacifiers, they tend to make them chew at the breast. You could try letting the baby suck on your pinky finger before a feeding to get him into the sucking routine, where you are stimulating his mouth with your finger against the roof of his mouth gently and see what he does, then put him to the breast. If you get a good suck, then he changes to an ineffective one, take him off and try again. He'll eventually get it.  Expressing your milk while he is at the breast may keep him interested. Is your nipple graspable for him, is  he able to get it to the roof of his mouth?
Have you ever had any thyroid or fertility problems? No problems with the pregnancy or delivery?

Has your pediatrician evaluated baby for tongue-tie? My nephew had tongue-tie (when the tongue is attached more than usual underneath) and this prevented him from having a good ability to suck. After having the procedure to correct the issue, he was fine. You may want to have your son evaluated by your pediatrician.
