possible milk allergy?

possible milk allergy?

I have a 2 1/2 month old daughter who is  and has been exclusively breastfeeding. well i have noticed that if i have a lot of dairy during the day that she seems fussier in the evening and gets very gassy (stinky gassy too) and her belly seems kind of bloated. I am thinking it is probably due to a milk allergy, especially since there is quite a few milk allergies and intolerances in both sides of the family (my mother and sister are intolerant, my borther is mildly allergic, my husband is intolerant, I am not intolerant or allergic, but one of my other children is intolerant too!) I am planning on talk with her pediatrician about this, but have only recently noticed, also I was recently sick and my milk went down a little while I was sick, so I gave her a little bit of a bottle while I was dehydrated she drank it although she did'nt really seem to like it, burped well, but then projectile vomited it all back up.  anyway i was just wondering if anyone has had experience with this or has any advice, Thanks

It can happen from foods you eat, for sure.  For example, often broccoli does this to babies when it comes through the mom's milk.  The only way to tell is to eat your usual diet minus only one particular thing, a few days at a time.  It sounds like you've already determined it is milk, but watch for things that "double up" (for an obvious example, if you never eat broccoli except in cream of broccoli soup, was it the broccoli or the cream?)  The pediatrician should be able to give you a good list of the usual suspects (in terms of food mom eats) and you could work from that and do some elimination testing.

Good thing you're breastfeeding! So many people have to go through so many formulas before finding one their baby can tolerate.
My first was not affected by anything I ate. Any amount of onion I ate severely aggravated my second baby's reflux. I couldn't even eat plain jarred tomato sauce because it has onion powder in it. While it was challenging for me in the beginning, it actually benefited us in the end because we learned to cook new things and opened ourselves up to new flavors and ingredients.
Dairy is hard to eliminate totally because it is a part of all foods, but you can try to for 2 weeks. Although, since it sounds like she's only bad if you have a lot of dairy, then i would think it may be more likely an intolerance than an allergy. Before going all-out in scrutinizing your diet, go a few days without glasses of milk, cheese sandwiches, and icecream and see if that helps.

I found this info helpful-

(if link is deleted, I just googled "dairy sensitivity in breastfed baby" and clicked the first link)

i went through the same thing with my son, but only till he was 2 weeks old. he would just eat and eat and then vomit, all the time. his doctors kept telling me that it was dairy i was eating, but when i cut dairy from my diet completely, the problem persisted. i eventually put him on a low-lactose formula and he never had another problem.  his doctors swear up and down that babies cannot be allergic to breastmilk, but thats the only feasable explanation in my sons case.

talk to your baby's docotrs, but always trust your instincts. doctors are people too, and they can be wrong. they dont know everything, and will often treat you like you know nothing, especially if you are a young mother...but mommy just knows sometimes.

My first had problems with everything it seemed, I was left with bland foods, The thing is that breastmilk is very high in lactose, the foremilk and more protiens you may eat can be hard on babies belly, it is not always an allergy or sensitivity but just plain extra protiens are harder the littlier they are. As they get older is when you knwo for sure if it is an allergy or not. My son had an allergy and he got a BAD diaper rash from it whenever I had dairy even when older, but my girls as they got older if I drank water with the little bits here and there they were fine. But my fourth one I am nursing has the rashes and stopped the vomiting now he is 6 months but now has exema (eczema)! I thought he was getting better since he was older as he was not throwing up anymroe but the exema (eczema) now has made me to believe it is an allergy. But all breastmilk, and formula has lactose, breastmilk having the most.

babies are born to drink milk and the older you get the less milk you need and like th eelderly can not tolerate milk things at all, thier digestive systems can just not do it, so the older you get are more likly to be lactose intolerant. A baby that is true lactose intolerant will not agin weight and projectile vomit any kind of milk as soon as it hits the belly, even soy has lactose! The Nutrimigen and Alimentium does not and is not milk based and I have no clue what it is but it stinks!!!

But sounds like you know it is the milk products, I had to play the elimination game for weeks! Also my allergist/pediatricain said that babies with milk allergies in the family not to introduce any milk products to them befoer age two, has your told you that? I know not all do and I have jsut followed his guideline.

Oh and Babies R Us has this yogurt maker for I think $39 and you can use your breastmilk! Cool for little ones who can't ahve milk products! I even made ice cream for my kids when they were little with my breastmilk as they couldn't have milk at thier b-day. But everyone knew it was specail for them;)haha taht would of been good to get on camera if someone messed up!
