pumping? and nursing.!!

Hello Ladies I was just wondering if there is anyone else that is nursing. and also pumping when they feel like their breast are getting full and baby is sleeping. well this is my issue I have been bfing my son since day one which is 3 weeks today he eats like every hour it seems.. and sometimes 2-3 hours. is he getting enough milk? he pee`s and bm between 6 to 9 diapers a day and most  the time he fills his diaper pretty fast.. so from that I`d say he is getting enough.. right? and when I pump I get 2 oz. from each side ( i pump for 10 min each side.) then my milk dont come out much.. is this normal? is anyone else like this.. Thank you ladies for any advice I`d appreciate any responses... :0)

Hi,

it definitely sounds like he is gettin genough milk from his diapeer activities.

It is normal that the amount of milk you can get pumping is not the same as what yourr baby can get.  Baby is way more efficient that a pump.

I can usually only get about 3 oz per side (max) with pumping.... in about 10 - 15 mins.  So I'd say you are perfectly normal.

I was having kind of the same issue...however, I'm only getting about 1oz 10 min on each side for a total of only 2 oz's...im frustrated and kind of scared that my supply is decreasing..mind you I'm only pumping once a day and having the little one nurse about 3-4 times a day and the rest I'm supplementing with formula so that he meets his hunger needs...

I am getting 2oz each side in about 7 min now.. and then nothing it just dont come out anymore well not much but when my lil guy nurses he is getting alot more than when im pumping b.c he spits it back out like if he has to much to swallow in his little mouth. so I am pretty sure he is getting my milk now which i feel alot better. i havent gave any formula or bottles to him. and im praying it stays that way. I heard if you supplement with the bottle and nurse less than when you first started bf`ing that your milk supply will go down. I pump once a day but not always just when im feeling full and my lil man is sleeping. and i throw the milk away. I am looking for some info on how to store the milk and how long is it good for. since i can pump at least 4 oz in less than 20 min now I want to start putting it in the freezer so when he strt to eat ceral and etc i can use my breastmilk  with it not formula.. did you try to just nnurse him longer>? and leave the bottle out ??

don't throw out the milk!!! definitely freeze it. i use breastmilk freezerbags- you can find them in any baby store and many other stores like pharmacies, target, walmart, etc... carry them in the baby isle.

if your freezer is a part of your fridge, it's good 3 to 6 months. In a deep freezer, it's good up to a year. If you put it in a freezer that is opened frequently, stick it in the back so there's less temperature variation.

If I were you, I would collect it in the fridge until you have enough to freeze. I try to freeze milk within 3 days of it being pumped, but sometimes freeze it after 4 or 5 and it's still good. If you are pumping a total of 4 oz in a session (2 from each side), you can just freeze a 4 oz bag. Or, to be thrifty, you can put that 4 oz into the fridge. The next time you pump, cool the milk in the fridge, and THEN add 2 of the new ounces to the existing 4 and freeze a 6 ounce bag.

You can combine milk from different sessions. Just be sure to cool it first, otherwise when you pour warm milk into chilled milk, you'll be warming the cool milk. Cool milk before putting it in the freezer. When you freeze milk, try to get as much air as possible out of the bag. Then, lay it flat in the freezer until it's frozen. This makes storing it much easier and space efficient. When 1 have 10 bags frozen, I put them into a gallon-sized ziplock and place that standing up in the back of the freezer.
