refusal of the bottle

by meiram, Oct 25, 2009 07:01PM
Help!  I am going back to work Tuesday and we just found out that ds won't suck on the bottle nipple.  He just holds it in his mouth and lets his mouth fill with milk then tries to swallow it.  That results in choking and gagging and vomiting up what ever he did swallow.  We tried a bottle about 2 weeks ago and it went ok.  But tonight was a different story.  We just started (about 5 days ago) giving him Zantac via syringe.  He is acting like his bottle is the syringe.  We tried dh and MIL giving it to him while I was out of the house, and I tried giving it to him.  Any suggestions?

Are you using a different bottle/nipple?  Is it a slow flow nipple?  From experience I know if they are hungry enough they will suck from anything...Maybe keep using the bottle more often to get him used to it, you mentioned you used it 2wks ago and again tonight, is that the only times he's sucked from a bottle?  Acclimate him more to the bottle, that will help familiarize him with it.  I wish I could be more help!

Well, after trying several different nipples, we finally found one he likes.  It is the Gerber  NUK.  Thank goodness.  Lesson learned...don't wait so long to introduce a bottle and give it every once in awhile.  So, off to work I go...

Glad you found something that works! DD did the same thing, ended up having to use nipples that were only available at the outlets about 125miles away! She liked the flat ortho ones.
