Carcinoid

Hello,

My father recently had his first colonoscopy at the age 49.  The doctor initially told him that he had a clean bill of health and that they removed what appeared to be small fold of skin.  The doc then called back a few days later informing him that he needed to contact a specialist and that they discovered a small carcinoid tumor in his rectum.

Unfortunately the doctor was very vague over the phone and did not offer much in terms of answers or a possible prognosis.  I was wondering if anyone had any further information on this type of tumor.  Is there any chance it is benign?  Can they be treated/cured?  Any further information would be very, very helpful.  Thank you.

UPDATE:

My father's tumor was found to be 6 mm and they believe it to be localized.  This thursday, we will have test back to hopefully confirm that it has not spread.  He will also have surgery to remove anything that was not already taken out during the colonoscopy.
